We are whitewater kayakers and specialise in discovering new rivers all over the world. Kayaking is what first brought us to Meghalaya, a state in north east India. We came back year after year to see our friends, find new rivers to paddle and cool places to visit. Instead of getting real jobs, we thought it would be a great idea to invent a reason to stay - and who knows, maybe even make some money (cue laughter).

Sitting by the Umtrew river, we hatched a plan to build an overland bus. Honestly, I don't know where the idea came from but we decided to stick with it. A year later, we'd raised enough money and found ourselves back in Shillong. Our friend and Shillong local Banjop became the third (and most important) member of the AIO team.

We intended to convert one of the beautiful Shillong style busses but soon discovered that they are not tall enough for us to stand up inside (and we're no giants). Instead, we bought a used coal truck and started from scratch using traditional methods. We employed a team of skilled coachbuilders and after four months, the AIO bus started to take shape.

We spent another 6 weeks parked at our friends' place building beds, fitting electronics and plumbing. Then we set off on a 7000km maiden voyage across India and deep into the Himalayas. All of the windows fell out, we fried the clutch and opened the roof like a tin can on a sharp cliff. But fundamentally, the idea worked. We had built a comfortable, spacious and homely overland bus!

We returned to Shillong, made lots of improvements and welcomed our first guests. This is what they had to say. Really, the story has only just begun. Join us on a trip and find out why we love this place so much!
